Real Artists Don't Starve

Timeless Strategies for Thriving in the New Creative Age

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

Have you heard it said that creatives should wait for inspiration? How about the one that says it’s selling out if an artist strategizes to profit off of their work? Or that a true artist works alone? In Real Artists Don’t Starve, author and creativity expert Jeff Goins has set out to replace these false narratives and replace them with timeless strategies for thriving as a creative and debunking the myth of the starving artist. From graphic designers and writers to artists and business professionals, creatives already know that no one is born an artist. Instead, those who have entered a creative field have already utilized the imagination in fundamental ways in order to accomplish what they have thus far. And contrary to popular myth, Goins believes their artistic temperament has actually given them a competitive advantage in the marketplace.Through inspiring anecdotes of successful creatives both past and present, Goins explores the tension every creative person and organization faces in an effort to blend the inspired life with a practical path to success. Being creative isn’t a disadvantage for success; rather, it is a powerful tool to be harnessed.

Customer Reviews

Reading Real Artists Don't Starve rekindled belief in myself as an artist--and inspired me to keep creating what I love. The interviews are intriguing, and the way Jeff organized the 12 rules with explanations and anecdotes really spoke to me. Jeff grew the artist inside of me! Thanks!!

Would Recommend

I really enjoyed this book for the most part and got a lot of actionable advice and inspiration from it. I've recommended it to several artist friends who are in different stages of their careers. WARNING THOUGH. This is not an issue with the book but with iBook: I saw that an update was available for the book so I updated it, but after doing so my many valued highlights and notes were completely messed up and inaccessible. 😒

No excuse left.

When I started out as a writer and speaker, I felt that I would make little money doing it. As I read into Jeff's work and this book, I came to the conclusion, you make what you want to. If you want to be broke, you made that choice. What I really like about Jeff is he puts the ball in your court. He says here's the way I walked, your's may look different but I'm paying my bills and creating more art. To sum this review up, of your wondering whether to buy or not, here's why I bought the book. First, I know I'm supposed to write, so I must become teachable with other writers. Second, when decide to invest in others work you reap the same for yourself. Third, when you celebrate other artists/creatives/writers you will one day be celebrated. So if your in, celebrate with Jeff in this amazing book he poured his heart into!
