Book 3, A Virgil Flowers Novel

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

The murder of a successful advertising executive leads Detective Virgil Flowers to the unlikely scene of the crime: a peaceful and bucolic wooded resort. But one with as many suspects as it has secrets.

From Publishers Weekly

Aug 10, 2009 – Near the start of bestseller Sandford's winning third thriller to feature Virgil Flowers of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (after Heat Lightning), Virgil gets a call while muskie fishing from his boss, Lucas Davenport (the hero of Sandford's long-running Prey series). Lucas orders Virgil to look into the shooting death of Erica McDill, an ad agency exec from Minneapolis and a big supporter of the Democratic Party, who was staying at the Eagle Nest Lodge in nearby Grand Rapids. A talk with lodge owner Margery Stanhope turns up unusual details: Margery's clientele is mostly lesbian; an all-female rock band is involved; guests who are so inclined can buy young men for an evening's pleasure; and financial reasons could explain the murder. It's a complicated case, but Virgil is up to the task, and, as always, he's funny, smart and tough when he needs to be and catnip to the ladies. 500,000 first printing.

Customer Reviews

Strong book in the prey fashion with another great lead character in Virgil Flowers. Action plus common sense investigation makes this a solid read.

Great book

I read all of the Prey novels. I enjoyed them a lot but quite frankly, had started to get a bit bored of Davenport. Branching off with Virgil Flowers was a great idea at this point in the series. A mention or brush with Davenport is fine with me, or even with Davenport as a minor character, which this book does.

If you read all the Prey novels, you'll surely enjoy Sandford's fresh direction with Rough Country.

Rough Country

I really enjoyed the Kidd series and of course I enjoyed the Prey series, (for awhile) then I got tired of Davenport having bad days when the Porsche needed a tuneup. It was like John Sanford was righting for the wealthy one percent. Now with the Virgil Flowers books I can identify with the characters again, the humor is perfect the story lines are Sanford at his all time best. Let's hope Virgil sticks around for awhile.
