Royal saints were surprisingly thick on the ground in early times. Some of them again became, or had already been, thoroughgoing sinners. Whichever they were, both men and women, they influenced the development of and in a way that is described in order as far as possible. After official canonization began in 1625 the ranks thinned, though there remained informal, factual history with a few legends thrown recognisably in, and who want to know about other kings than Henry VIII. He is mentioned in proper course, but sparsely. Henry II, the devils descendant, is a favourite of the author, who published CURTMANTLE in 1996 with Robert Hale and has written a large number of accurately researched historical novels and two books of non-fiction. This is the third.
