RUIN & RULE is a full-length book at 436 pages and ends on a cliffhanger. Cleo and Kill's story continues in SIN & SUFFER.
I highly recommend this book! There are many twists and turns. I could not put this book down. I wanted more and more. I cannot wait for the second book to come out.
Usually when I finish a book I have an idea about how I felt about it. I'm either happy, dazed, wiping away tears, or wondering why I picked the book up. I was mostly dazed when I finished read Ruin & Rule. I had and still have no idea how to rate this book so I guess I'll talk about what I do know. I do know that I was hooked to the story from the very first page. I know I read it all in one sitting and stayed up late to finish it.
Pepper Winters can write. I've read 6/9 of her published books. She has this way of writing that seems like poetry. She uses words that create vivid mental images and ensnare your emotions until you're held hostage to the story being told. This book has all the prose her previous books have had. It also packed the emotional punches that I am used to experiencing. It's not unusual for me to feel and experience the rage, lust, or even peace the characters are feeling. The twists are huge and often unexpected. I was shocked by a number of them. I think because I had an idea of what was going to be the cliffhanger I wasn't as taken aback as I should have been. I know some people like to know if there is a cliffhanger. I don't because it ruins the authenticity of my response to the story.
It boils down to this. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was hot, intense, and full of suspense. It was gory, gruesome, real, harsh, but still beautiful. I really liked the mystery aspect. In fact, I'd describe this book as a mystery within a mystery. I'm curious to know what it is Kill is hiding from Cleo, although that isn't the smaller or even larger mystery in question. I also have a feeling that not every one's intentions are pure, especially towards Cleo and Kill. A lot was revealed in this book about Kill and Cleo's pasts, clearing somethings, but I'm looking forward to seeing what is really going on in Sin & Suffer, the conclusion to Kill and Cleo's story.
5 vengeance stars for Killian. The green-eyed math genius.
What's in store for you readers is an awesome and challenging tale of uncovering the truth of their pasts and seeking revenge against those who tried to destroy it.
Wow! What an introduction. No names, no memories, just war. I'm captivated and hanging on every word. As always Pepper has a knack for writing stories that are interesting and puzzling. Each chapter begins with a small snippet of thoughts and words from Killian. The rest of the chapter is told from the girls POV. (We get her name later on but I'm going to continue referring to her as girl.) The girl has no memories of who she is.
Pepper is great with complex male characters. Killian is a brooding, temperamental man. As for the female character she is tough yet feminine.
I'm not usually a fan of MC stories but I think I might have found the first to break the mold. What I like most is that even though this is referenced as a MC club story it does not come across that way. I got so engrossed in Killian's character that I forgot who he was until Pepper made references towards his jacket symbol. Pepper is great in her delivery, challenging the reader with her unique quality of words. I don't want to stop reading. I need a reading crave to hide in, in order to finish. I need more time in the day to read. Each chapter offers a lengthy description opening your mind, one piece at a time. Trapped by her own mind with very little to claim.
Living a nightmare, is what is happening to the girl and Killian. Both are tormented by a past that haunts them. Scenario one: living with the nightmare of not knowing who you are. Scenario two: the nightmare of being kidnapped and relying upon your kidnapper for answers. I love the unveiling layers of her memories. It's interesting and refreshing reading about the girl when a memory surfaces. It's like relearning and discovering yourself all over again. Sometimes a word or an odor will trigger a memory and Pepper will insert this memory into the story periodically.
How I would love to be inside Pepper's mind. All these fantastic characters and plots that she makes come to life on these pages. I need pictures and drawings to go along with the storyboard. One day soon I hope someone decides to produce movies or a series with her work.
What I love most about Pepper's books is the quality of each story written. We get a lengthy thick book full of detailed information. This book took me four days to finish. I spent 5 hours each day delving into Pepper's world. I don't want it to be over. It was getting quite exciting. I'm on pins and needles anxiously awaiting the outcome. Where does she come up with these ingenious story ideas? It amazes me how Pepper writes these stories while completely entertaining my thoughts with fresh concepts. Pepper certainly knows how to keep her readers alert and interested. I could write a book myself and fill it with complements all in the name of Pepper Winters. Any person who picks up a book by Pepper should consider themselves lucky to have had the privilege of reading one of her great stories.
I slept last night dreaming about these characters as if I myself was the girl in the story. Who would have thought Pepper's story would have such an impact on my mind that even during sleep I still could not get enough.
