“An impossible-to-put-down Harvey Wallbanger of a mystery. With a smart, funny protagonist who’s learning to own her power as a woman, Send in the Clowns is one boss read.” – Ellen Byron, Agatha Award-Nominated Author of Plantation Shudders

Haunted houses are scary enough without knife-wielding clowns. Especially murderous knife-wielding clowns. So thinks Ellison Russell, single mother, artist, and reluctant sleuth.
Now death wears a red nose and Ellison is up to the blood-stained collar of her new trench coat in costumes, caffeine, and possible killers. Who stabbed Brooks Harney? And why? Money? Jealousy? Drugs?
With Mother meddling, her father furious, and her date dragged downtown for questioning, turns out Ellison's only confidante is Mr. Coffee.

Related subjects include: cozy mysteries, women sleuths, murder mystery series, whodunit mysteries (whodunnit), amateur sleuth books, book club recommendations, humorous murder mysteries, historical mysteries.

Author Bio

Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders. She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean—and she's got an active imagination. Truth is—she's an expert at calling for take-out, she grumbles about walking the dog and the dust bunnies under the bed have grown into dust lions.

Great escapist fiction

Loved all the books in the country club murder series. The 70s references were a perfect flashback to a time of Loves Baby Soft and Halston halter dresses. A lighthearted but well written series

Send in the Clowns

Just finished reading Send in the Clowns by Julie Mulhern. This author's writing just keeps getting better! I could hardly put the book down. Funny, true-to-life characters about in her latest book. You will not want to miss this series!

Julie Mulhern does it again with Send in the Clowns!

Send in the Clowns is the fourth installment in the Country Club Murders series by Julie Mulhern. Life is quite hectic this particular October in 1974. Ellison Russell, widow, artist, mother of a teenager, has barely recovered from the events of the past few months, when her daughter Grace misses curfew after visiting a haunted house with a group of friends. Frantic for her daughter's safety when she learns that all her friends are home safely and each one thinks Grace rode home with another one, Ellison goes to the haunted house to find her. What she finds instead is a staggering clown, stabbed and slurring her name, stumbling towards her, sliding down her new coat and collapsing at her feet.

By the time Ellison finds someone to listen to her and return to the scene, the body is missing but the pool of blood is still there. She feigns lightheadedness and is escorted to the office where she asks to use the phone. She calls home to find that Grace is home, having taken a cab, then calls Detective Anarchy Jones to report the crime, much to the dismay of the owner of the haunted house. Once the investigation begins, Ellison is bombarded from all sides, people revealing too much information, villains thinking she knows too much, and the vision of the murderous clown with black holes for eyes. And Ellison has a deep set fear of clowns.

As with every book in this series, Julie Mulhern sets the 70's stage perfectly. The story is told with humor, intrigue, and a twisty-turny plot. She also captures what it was like as a woman in that era. Ellison's strong character shows how a strong woman was perceived by the men in her life, how it was assumed she needed to be taken care of and was not able to do so herself. It is equally well written and has the same level of intricate plot and rich characters as all books in this series. Although this story could certainly stand alone, why would anyone not want to read each book in this great series? I highly recommend this book and this series.
