A Peace which must be defended. A vow which must be broken.
It is the final decade of the ninth century. The Peace between Wessex and the Danes long-settled in the Danelaw erodes. A new onslaught of Danes attacks Angle-land, trying once and for all to destroy Ælfred.
Ceric of Kilton, now a young man, travels across Kingdoms to visit his friend, Hrald of Four Stones - and to see Ashild, who he desires for his wife. But renewed hostilities threaten Ceric's hopes for deeper ties between strongholds.
And hundreds of leagues away on the Baltic island of Gotland, Hrald's father Sidroc the Dane must defy his Gods.
The revered Hammer of Thor. The sacred Cross of the Christians. And the conflict that pits two beliefs, two great war-chiefs, and three young people against each other.
A New Generation Beckons You...
Silver Hammer Golden Cross
I love this series . You start slowly building into a fever and that you can not put the book down. Forget about your duties and take a vacation into the beautiful world of the Danish and Anglo history. The characters are ones to love , weep and cheer for. This I see becoming a series on T .V. And I love a romantic historical book. If you like Outlander you will love this book.Bravo Octavia Randolph
From the very start of Silver Hammer, Golden Cross, I was on the edge of my seat based solely on the tension of the title. Given that Book 5 of the series left off at a point of relative peace in the land, it was foreshadowed that the children of the main characters might find themselves on opposing sides one day. I devoured this story in just a few days, anxious to discover how the tension between the Saxon characters from Angle Land and the Danes would rise and how the characters would react to potential conflict of another invader.
Octavia Randolph's keen descriptions of the interplay among the characters was so satisfying, as I was left continually guessing at the outcome of specific events. None of it was predictable, though I was given some strong clues based on how certain characters had either previously risen to the occasion in similar circumstances or made mistakes. It was a joy to be left guessing how Ashild, the strong willed young maiden would make her decision between two suitors. The arc of the book made it clear that Sidroc must return to Four Stones, leaving Ceridwen, and there was delicious anticipation as to how his return to Four Stones would be viewed by his thegns, his first wife, and especially by his children.
I so appreciated the consistent emphasis on the dynamic between the pagan ways of the old gods and the early Christians. I loved the insight and great details of the interplay of how challenging it must have been for the priests and nuns to practice their faith among many pagans, but also how beautiful and sacred way in which the followers of the old gods practiced their traditions. All in all a fantastic read for anyone who likes an intriguing story steeped in history with lovable and relatable characters. Eagerly waiting book #7!
The next generation
After the bucolic Tindr we enter the tension filled reality of two cultures. The king is dead and there seems none fit to take his place. Danes who have lived long in Angelia must decide if they will keep Alfred's peace or war. Four Stones sits at the center of opposing forces and will play a pivotal role in the outcome; but its leader is young and untried. Son of the famed Sidroc, Harold and his beloved sister will show their metal. A tale of great action and adventure with detailed battles. This is a book you will not be able to put down. Strongly recommend.
