This book is not research-based. It doesn’t have footnotes or citations on every page—it is based on my perception, from the classroom, of what’s happening, why, and how we can make things better. There are many “experts” criticizing public education and teachers, but few of the “experts” seem to be teachers, who are the only ones with the expertise and perspective required to identify and solve the problems we face. It’s time the profession is returned to the position in our society it deserves. It’s time we are allowed to get back to doing the jobs we were trained to do instead of teaching to standardized tests that are meaningless in any real way to the students required to take them or the world those students will one day inhabit. It’s time that the people who have spent a few years or a lifetime in the classroom to lead the conversations about what to do going forward.
