Description

The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths series and Burying Water—which Kirkus Reviews called “a sexy, romantic, gangster-tinged page-turner”—returns with a new novel packed with romance, plot twists, and psychological suspense.

Ivy Lee, a talented tattoo artist who spent the early part of her twenties on the move, is looking for a place to call home. She thinks she might have finally found it working in her uncle’s tattoo shop in San Francisco. But all that changes when a robbery turns deadly, compelling her to pack up her things yet again.

When they need the best, they call him. That’s why Sebastian Riker is back in California, cleaning up the mess made after a tattoo shop owner who resorted to blackmail and got himself shot. But it’s impossible to get the answers he needs from a dead body, leaving him to look elsewhere. Namely, to the twenty-something-year-old niece who believes this was a random attack. Who needs to keep believing that until Sebastian finds what he’s searching for.

Ivy has one foot out of San Francisco when a chance encounter with a stranger stalls her departure. She’s always been drawn to intense men, so it’s no wonder that she now finds a reason to stay after all, quickly intoxicated by his dark smile, his intimidating strength, and his quiet control.

That is, until Ivy discovers that their encounter was no accident—and that their attraction could be her undoing.

Tattoos, romance and murder mystery...Oh my!

Let me start by saying I loved the badassery of Ivy. The girl on the cover is the perfect fit. I already knew I loved the character from her introduction in the earlier books of the series. In Surviving Ice you learn that Ivy hides her vunerable and insecure side. She makes me think of the saying "fake it til you make it." She makes up for her small stature with a big attitude and stubborn disposition. Her frequent moves keeps her circle of friends small but loyal. When Sebastian comes on the scene the attraction is instant.

My love for Sebastian was not insta-love and I know it's because of his choice to employ hookers. With his training as a Navy Seal he was accustomed to being in control. His military service has left many scars on his skin and his psyche. As I got to know more about his character and what has driven him to withdraw from his family and relationships he definitely claimed my heart. I loved that from the moment he met Ivy he was compelled to protect her even though his job might include having to kill her.

Ivy's Uncle has been her mentor and his tattoo shop had finally given her a place that she felt at home. His murder was even more tragic with her having been hidden in another room of the shop when it happened. I loved the added bit of suspense because of the who-done-it murder mystery. Sebastian is in a race to find the security camera proof that led to the murder before his boss and the idiots responsible for the murder demand Ivy's extermination. Being the best at his job may not save his burgeoning relationship with Ivy because of the lies he had to tell in the beginning. Luckily Ivy's best friends seem to be on Team Sebastian.

Ivy's Uncle was no saint but his murder was not necessary and I was happy with Sebastian's brand of justice. Ivy and Sebastian find happiness and love and a place to call home in each other. Another great read from Tucker.

An excellent end to the series!

Surviving Ice is the fourth book in the Burying Water series, and in my opinion, the absolute best. I loved this story! It is suspenseful, captivating, and un-put-downable. It kept me on the edge of my seat and glued to my Kindle.

I first met Ivy in the third book of the series, Chasing River, and her character intrigued me. She was so cool, to the point of being unaffected and detached, but you knew there was more to the story. When I found out that the fourth book was about her, I knew that it would be a must-read. I’m happy to say that it exceeded any expectations I may have had.

Ivy is a totally kickass heroine. She’s strong, feisty, sassy, and fiercely independent. She’s also a free spirit who doesn’t do attachments or commitments. Just when she is ready put down roots in San Francisco, tragedy strikes and Ivy is suddenly (and unknowingly) in grave danger.

That’s where Sebastian comes in. He’s is a highly trained soldier who has the ‘lone wolf’ vibe going on. Once he meets Ivy, though, all bets are off. Their connection is palpable and their razor-sharp banter is highly entertaining. It also makes for some great inner dialogue. I love that this story is told in alternating points of view, so we can see the inner workings of each of their minds.

Ivy has a prickly exterior and a tough-girl façade, but the challenge keeps Sebastian coming back for more. They each get under the others skin, and the timing is less than ideal, but the dangerous situation makes everything more intense. I loved how protective he is of Ivy, even when she doesn’t realize she needs protection.

As with all of KA Tucker’s books, the writing is superb. I love how she weaves stories together, combining all of the elements of a great story. Surviving Ice is definitely one of my favorite reads of the year.
