One of Booklist's 10 Best Crime Fiction Books of the Year
LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well. Nine months ago, a shocking assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty—until he meets his new partner.
Maggie is not doing so well, either. A German shepherd who survived two tours in Afghanistan sniffing explosives before losing her handler, her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s.
They are each other’s last chance. And they’re about to investigate the one case no one wants them to touch: identifying the men who murdered Stephanie. But what they find could ultimately break them both.

Once I started reading this book I couldn't put it down. I'm not a dog person but Maggie captured my heart. I cried through the first chapter when Maggie lost Pete. But loved every moment when Maggie met Scott. What a great story and I hope we see more books about these 2 amazing characters. You won't be sorry you bought this novel.
Calling All Animal Lovers
I could not put this book down. You immediately fall in love with Maggie, the German Shepard in the book.
All animal lovers should read this book.
Great mystery, filled with suspense and emotion
Crais' novels are always outstanding, and so I find myself counting the days until another of his books is published.
This time around, I was struck by Crais' use of multiple POVs...with incredible character development embedded in plot, rather than the other way around. For once, a writer of tough suspense novels has reached the heart of the protagonists' hearts. And I do intend that bit of redundancy.
