Tables from the Rubble

How the Restaurants That Arose After the Great Quake Still Feed San Francisco Today

This book is available for download with Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device. Multi-touch books can be read with Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device. Books with interactive features may work best on an iOS device. Apple Books on your Mac requires OS X 10.9 or later.

Tables from the Rubble, an interactive book, transports readers to San Francisco in the years just after the Great Earthquake of 1906. Amid the ruins of a crumbled city, restaurants rose to feed the hungry and lead the recovery. Today, a handful of the restaurants that opened in those boom years remain, serving customers in the same spaces they first opened – offering food, drinks, and stories with a direct link to a 100-year-old past.

Featured restaurants include Swan Oyster Depot, Liguria Bakery, Comstock Saloon, Sam Wo, the Palace Hotel, the House of Shields bar, John's Grill and Schroeder's. Tables from the Rubble includes new videos and photos from each restaurant, dozens of historic photos, a gallery of old Palace Hotel menus going back 100 years, an interactive map, recipes – including the recipes for Swan Oyster Depot's clam chowder and the Palace Hotel's Green Goddess salad dressing – and links to original sources. Readers can explore old San Francisco in an entirely new way.

What's New in Version 2.0

The 2017 edition includes new sections on Comstock Saloon, John’s Grill, Schroeder’s, and A. La Rocca Sea Food – along with additional photographs and many new details about the restaurants in the first edition. This edition also tells the full story of how Chinatown’s Sam Wo was saved by the hard work of the community, the Ho family, and investors committed to the historic restaurant’s legacy.

Customer Reviews

Beautifully Done!

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake is very much a part of my family history. My father and all of my grandparents lived through the disaster. And, I had the pleasure of growing up in The City giving a personal connection of the then-and-now of Tables. But, you don't have to be an SF native to enjoy this beautifully done interactive book. If you love good food, history, and a determined human spirit, you will love Tables.
