The Art of Shop

This multimedia, interactive ebook describes the fine arts approach in the woodworking studio, where ideas and personal expressions precede or join the skills of manipulating and joining materials. Berman demystifies the process of facilitating sculpture and musical instrument-making in the classroom, home or office. She describes the program she has developed and implemented for 21 years at Bank Street School for Children and College in New York City: the interdisciplinary, age-appropriate curricula for pre-K-8th grade, plus graduate school. It is illustrated by the students' visual work, videoclips of the work process, Berman's illustrations, along with verbatim emergent conversations. Also included is research to show what role 3D art and instrument-making has had in the course of human development, along with the role it needs to have in the future.
