NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

When Anne Morrow, a shy college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family, she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. In the years that follow, Anne becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States. But despite this and other major achievements, she is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life’s infinite possibilities for change and happiness.

From Publishers Weekly

Jan 14, 2013 – Talented historical novelist Benjamin has a knack for picking intriguing, if somewhat obscure, women in history and making them utterly unforgettable. Told from the perspective of Anne Lindbergh, wife of the famed aviator Charles, her third novel (after The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb) doesn't disappoint. When Anne first meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh in 1927 he's a hero, world-famous after completing his cross-Atlantic flight; Anne is a simple college girl living in the shadow of her radiant older sister Elisabeth. To everyone's surprise, then, it's Anne who catches Charles's eye. And so begins their enthralling journey together. Intimately depicting their marriage of duty and partnership in the air, as well as the horrific kidnapping and murder of first child Charles Jr., this is less love story than voyeuristic glimpse at one of the 20th century's most captivating men through the eyes of the woman who knew him best. In true Benjamin style, it's Anne who captures us all in this exquisite fictional take on an iconic marriage.

Customer Reviews

Loved the history

Anne morrow Lindbergh was a brave and conflicted woman of her times. The writing brings you there and you feel for the love, the loss, the contradictions of the time.

Flying with Anne

This was a fascinating read. I loved the way it was woven together. I loved the tension the author created between Charles and Anne. I was fascinated by the control issues Charles demonstrated and questioned why Anne allowed him to dictate every aspect of her life and that of the children. It seems to me this would be an excellent book for a discussion group. Was it the time in our history that swayed her to be so compliant or was it misplaced adoration? The author was right, the book stimulated a greater interest in me for more information about this remarkable couple.

Not the best writing

I was disappointed in the quality of the writing. Lacked sophistication. Sounded like it was written for a teenage girl. Nevertheless, I enjoyed learning about Anne Morrow Lindbergh. I sympathized with her and it was great to hear her story from her point of view.
