Pressing the boundaries of both the psyche and the heart, Sam and Holden embark on a dangerous journey that will test the limits of love.

Sam Wintry's life used to be almost perfect. She was engaged to her childhood best friend and high school sweetheart, Tyler Marks, planning an amazing cross-country honeymoon during her college break. But after a hit-and-run leaves her in ruin, she begins seeing Tyler's fractured, ghostly presence, and her family believes she's losing her mind. Not until she completes their journey, stopping along the way to scatter Tyler's remains, will Tyler be able cross over. Only...is Sam ready for him to leave her?

When the black sheep of the Marks' family, Holden Marks, returns to check on Tyler's case, Sam convinces him to give her his brother's ashes. Despite their shaky history, she needs him...plus, he owes it to Sam and his brother. What she doesn't count on is Holden's relentlessness to go on the trip.

On the road, Holden realizes just how unhinged Sam has become. Dealing with her psychosis forces him to confront his dark past, making it harder to keep secrets hidden that should remain buried. Especially from Sam, the only woman he's ever loved. And as Sam starts to unravel the truth, she begins to question if the brother she's unwillingly falling for again is in an even darker place than her.

Road trip to the truth

When holding onto regrets keeps Tyler’s ghost in this plane Sara orchestrates a road trip to help him crossover.
An impending truth is buried in a journal of secrets kept guarded by the one individual who can change the course of Tyler’s passing.

I wasn’t expecting the rekindling second chance romance. It felt like a bait and switch.

It’s not quite what I expected. I had preconceived ideas that this would be a haunting type of ghost story. This story didn’t venture into any of the areas my mind conjured up. Sadly, this specter plot was a ploy used against Sara’s character to illustrate how unstable she was. I felt it clouded the storyline taking the focus off the big reveal.

I must say Trisha’s most recent work is written better than her earlier work from 2013. She has certainly grown as a writer. With that said I chose this book because I enjoyed her most recent releases and figured I would work my way backwards by reading her earlier releases. However, like most authors the earlier work is still a working progress.

Even though, this is book 1 in the Living Heartwood series, I can confidently say these can be read separately. I’m not sure what Living Heartwood is in reference to, but these books are about different characters and can be read as a standalone. No particular order needs to be read.

This trip was a good concept, however it wasn’t executed smoothly. With the conversations between Tyler’s ghost and Sam, the journal, and the constant flirting with Holden I was put off by these tactics. This trip and the way it was mapped out was very minutely detailed. I didn’t need a step by step play of every move being made.

I realize these characters are teenagers, but their hormones are crowding the story. Instead of it creating angst it created tension.

Five times Trisha referenced the word “masochist” in regards to Holden. I’m not sure she’s clear on the definition of this word due to the way she inserted this word in each sentence. This word doesn’t even begin to describe Holden and it was ill putting to read this word.

Sam’s character felt weak to me. Her stubbornness to ignore help, yet scream at individuals who didn’t believe that she could see Tyler proved she was unstable. Sam’s character behaved immaturely and I couldn’t understand how these brothers held a torch for her. She had no insightful wisdom to offer. She was just a shallow girl who was a lost soul seeking comfort in the arms of either guy willing to offer her protection. Yet she had no tragic past to hide from.

The biker girls were included to set up another story and really had very little impact on this one. Another, ill putting scene that had no relevance to the story.

What a world to walk in!

This author is a new one to me but I can promise that I will be following up with more of her work! This story is so unique!!! I'm a voracious reader and I have NEVER read a story like the story of Sam, Tyler and Holden! This dark and treacherous path they travel to find peace, comfort, truth and the place they belong is one that will echo in my mind and heart for awhile! It's a wonderfully developed and executed storyline with the main characters so full and revealed so clearly and deftly that the reader isn't really aware of WHEN they realize they know them, it just IS! Editing is a wonderful tool for polishing a story but it takes talent and imagination to create something so visceral and life like! Read this today and allow your heart to break and mend along their journey!

Great read!

This was my first book I've read by this author. It was filled with so much emotion and very well written. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
