Publisher Description
Aliens have conquered Earth, but they haven’t conquered humanity—yet. A young army conscript battles for survival in this action-packed futuristic thriller that will appeal to fans of Halo and Inglorious Bastards.
People used to wonder if we were alone in the universe. Well, we’re not. Not by a long shot. Aliens come in all shapes and sizes, and even the good guys are likely to haunt your nightmares. And oh, you’ll have nightmares, even after you leave the service. If you leave the service.
Devin is a reluctant conscript to an alien-run army: when the Accordance conquered Earth, they said it was to prepare against the incoming alien Conglomeration forces. But as Devin travels to the dark side of the moon for boot camp and better acquaints himself with his so-called allies, his loyalties are increasingly tested. Because the enemy of the enemy is not always a friend. Sometimes they’re a far, far worse threat.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The pseudonymous Brown opens an SF series with a novel that can t quite figure out where it s going or what it ll do when it gets there. A group of aliens occupying Earth, called the Accordance, is battling another group known as the Conglomeration. Devlin Hart, the son of human protestors, is told he must serve in the Accordance army if he wants to save his parents from execution. When he stands up to an alien who s about to kill a human child, he is sent to train for his fate as cannon fodder. Devlin s training and first encounter with alien enemies show him to be more fallible than the average action hero; his choices are split evenly between intelligent and disastrous. The various aliens aren t distinguished particularly well, usually only described by comparison to some terrestrial animal. Devlin s adventures have the feel of a young adult coming-of-age novel, but some of the language and situations feel too strong for that audience. Perhaps future installments will find more of a groove.

Fun and fast read
I enjoyed this book. As I said fun and fast
Icarus really was an accurate title
I enjoyed reading 90% of this book. However, like the real Icarus, this book flew too high only to end in a disjointed crash. The final three chapters were a poorly written rush to the finish, that frankly would have been better completely omitted from the book.
My other complaint is the outrageous price for something that even with the three unnecessary chapters, was far too short. I read it in less than two hours. It didn't feel like a full length novel, although it was slightly longer than a novella. Disappointing.
That said, the premise was well thought out, and other than my previous comments, well written. I never felt dumped from the narrative (until the end), and this book was clearly an appetizer for the rest of the series. I will probably be reading those- but for free from my local library.
