The Forgotten

Book 2, John Puller Series

In Paradise, nothing is what it seems...

Army Special Agent John Puller is the best there is. A combat veteran, Puller is the man the U.S. Army relies on to investigate the toughest crimes facing the nation. Now he has a new case-but this time, the crime is personal: His aunt has been found dead in Paradise, Florida.

A picture-perfect town on Florida's Gulf Coast, Paradise thrives on the wealthy tourists and retirees drawn to its gorgeous weather and beaches. The local police have ruled his aunt's death an unfortunate, tragic accident. But just before she died, she mailed a letter to Puller's father, telling him that beneath its beautiful veneer, Paradise is not all it seems to be.

What Puller finds convinces him that his aunt's death was no accident . . . and that the palm trees and sandy beaches of Paradise may hide a conspiracy so shocking that some will go to unthinkable lengths to make sure the truth is never revealed.

Awful waste of money

This book was all over the place. It was badly written, stupid characters, and stupid (if you could follow it) plot. The main character was ridiculous, and the other characters were never developed, more like after thoughts. I read the whole book hoping it may get better or make sense, but that never happened. Total waste of my time and money. I have read all of his books, and they were good. Maybe his kid wrote this one. When I buy a book, especially from an author I respect, I do not expect this kind of writing. I will never buy another book written by him again. I actually read his afterward with him thanking his editor etc. they did not do their jobs. I have not read a book this bad in a long time.

Pretty good, but some bits made me scratch my head

(minor spoilers)
I'm usually a fan of Baldacci, and will likely buy this and provide a full review. But this sample had a couple plot bits that didn't make sense and continued to bother me as I read on.

When the big guy prisoner jumped off the oil rig platform, two things didn't make sense. One, it's a long way down to the water and I'd think it likely that he'd at least be knocked unconscious when hitting the water. Second, he had grabbed a life vest and put it on before he jumped off. It would have made it very difficult for him to stay submerged as they were shooting at him. Being bright orange, it also would have made him much easier to spot in the darkness as they searched for him (assuming they had lights). And are fishermen often out fishing in the middle of the night?

Later, after he reaches land, it says he had the streets memorized. How is that possible if he just arrived there for the first time in his life?

Interesting & Entertaining

Another great read! It started off a little slow, but once it picked up, it never slowed down. I thought I had it all figured out, but there were a few surprises! If you like stories where you feel like you have to play detective, then you will definitely enjoy!
