When down-at-heel, country boy troubadour Grey Stringham arrives in East London he meets Angelica; a beautiful, ruthless, narcissistic sociopath. They start a band on 'The Market' in Hackney, and between Grey's song-writing and Angelica's charisma, begin to enjoy some success in the rapidly gentrifying area. It seems Grey's dream of leaving behind his hobo life might actually be about to come true. But in reality his nightmare is just beginning: Grey's obsession with 'making it' and accompanying excesses lead his girlfriend to abort their unborn child; coming at the same time as an attempt by Angelica to steal his songs, Grey quits the band and begins drifting south toward Spain, a broken man. In desperation he turns back to the one thing he knows, winding up eventually at the mountainside recording studio of Captain Feliz; a washed up, middle-aged muso’ junky with unfortunate ties to Andalucia's Gypsy gang culture. Grey reaches out to Angelica and strikes a dubious deal for sync licensing on his new material; a desperate attempt at 'one more bite of the cherry'. During their attempts to make music together, Feliz and Grey attract the unwanted attention of Pistachio George, leader of the local Gypsy gang, who smashes up the studio and holds Grey hostage while Feliz is despatched to Morocco to retrieve a priceless first edition Don Quixote from the North African arm of George's family; a treasure he needs to pay off his debt to a crew of even more brutal Russian gangsters. During his captivity Grey falls in love with Katerina, George's daughter, and when she is kidnapped by the Russians, now pregnant with his child, Grey leads the gang to war, pouring all of the dark energy of his thwarted ambition into savagery; blind, in his own Quixotic crusade and frantic desperation to save his second unborn child, to the myriad lurking betrayals that will lead to his ultimate downfall. ‘The Guiri’ is a tale of obsession, excess, betrayal and music; set against the turbulent backdrop of a divided Europe on the brink of disintegration.
