Great book

Clancy's best...

"Red October" brings a deep sense of urgency and mystery to a compelling story. Ramius and Ryan drive each side of the defection attempt toward its exciting and harrowing end.

Great story, great detail

Clancy is clearly a great storyteller, and the technical detail in this book is legendary. It is truly hard to put this one down once you start reading it. The only fault is Clancy's USA=perfect Russia=evil/inferior theme, which runs throughout the book. We all know the real world isn't quite so simple, and so that detracts somewhat from the sense of realism. At times it reads like some 1950s anti-Soviet propaganda manual. That one weakness is hugely overshadowed by the book's great strengths, though: just read it!!
