The Landmark Thucydides

A Comprehensive Guide to the Peloponnesian War

Robert B. Strassler

This book is available for download with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device, and with iTunes on your computer. Books can be read with iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

Description

Thucydides called his account of two decades of war between Athens and Sparta “a possssion for all time,” and indeed it is the first and still most famous work in the Western historical tradition. Considered essential reading for generals, statesmen, and liberally educated citizens for more than 2,000 years, The Peloponnesian War is a mine of military, moral, political, and philosophical wisdom.

However, this classic book has long presented obstacles to the uninitiated reader. Robert Strassler's new edition removes these obstacles by providing a new coherence to the narrative overall, and by effectively reconstructing the lost cultural context that Thucydides shared with his original audience. Based on the venerable Richard Crawley translation, updated and revised for modern readers. The Landmark Thucydides includes a vast array of superbly designed and presented maps, brief informative appendices by outstanding classical scholars on subjects of special relevance to the text, explanatory marginal notes on each page, an index of unprecedented subtlety, and numerous other useful features.

In any list of the Great Books of Western Civilization, The Peloponnesian War stands near the top. This authoritative new edition will ensure that its greatness is appreciated by future generations.

Low-res maps defeat the purpose!

This book helps you make sense of Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian War. I have the print-edition, which is fantastic. I hoped to have a digital version, but this one is a huge disappointment because the maps are included as low, low-res scans. You can barely read any details (such as city names), which makes it hard to follow Thucydides' storyline.

The publisher needs to reissue this download with higher-res maps. It's an insult to charge $17.99 for this thing in its current state.

Very poor rendering of highly detailed maps defeats the purpose of this series

The entire series of “Landmark” books are unrivaled for their detail and map quality. This is the reason I have given it 5 stars. The physical books are fantastic; unfortunately, the digital editions are extremely disappointing since the maps are often illegible. Forget about zooming in for a better view, it is a blurred mess that will give you a headache. Really wish these could be done right.

An awkward transition to an ebook

The print edition is wonderful but some mistakes have been made in the production of the electronic version. The biggest problem is that the sections become mis-numbered midway through the first book. Then there are the typos. Also, footnotes have not been adequately converted for this edition. Finally, if you haven't seen the print edition, it will not be obvious to you which parts were actually written by Thucydides and which are the summaries of the sections originally appearing in the margins. Hopefully these problems will be corrected. Until then stick with the print edition.
