The Little Prince

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

Few stories are as widely read and as universally cherished by children and adults alike as The Little Prince. Richard Howard's translation of the beloved classic beautifully reflects Saint-Exupéry's unique and gifted style. Howard, an acclaimed poet and one of the preeminent translators of our time, has excelled in bringing the English text as close as possible to the French, in language, style, and most important, spirit. The artwork in this edition has been restored to match in detail and in color Saint-Exupéry's original artwork. Combining Richard Howard's translation with restored original art, this definitive English-language edition of The Little Prince will capture the hearts of readers of all ages.

This title has been selected as a Common Core Text Exemplar (Grades 4-5, Stories).

Customer Reviews

happy for color drawings, unhappy about frozen font size

I always wanted a version with true color figures, so good!

But I am shocked that the font size is not adjustable as in all the other books I have downloaded from the iBooks store. This is awful! I own a print copy, but wanted the digital one so I could change the font size. (screen zoom is not an acceptable substitute)

The iBooks store should warn customers about surprise limitations like this in books up for sale.

(very unhappy.)

Best book ever

Beautiful book

Poor translation — seek out others

This review is for the translation, not the Saint-Exupery book itself.

If you are reading this book, I hope you know that it was originally written in French. While I have read speculation that the Richard Howard translation was produced so the publisher could retain the copyright, it is very different — but not better -- than the Katherine Woods translation that I first read. Howard makes editorial choices, evident in the very first sentence of the book, to remove words that go beyond faithful translation from French to English. In my view, that’s akin to removing petals from a rose to make it prettier.

While this version of the book has more color illustrations, it lacks text resizing features found in other less-expensive versions found in the iBooks Store.

In my view, those less-expensive versions based on the Woods translation are a better value.
