The Myth of Return

The Myth of Return offers a sensitive and moving insight into the losses, gains and adjustments that surround refuge seekers in Britain, sometimes long after their arrival and settlement.

In photographs and recorded interviews, a group of women present and talk about objects that are precious to them or that carry meaning – a cup, a photo, a hammer. Separation and relationships are consistent themes, but the women also comment on social structures, affluence and faith as they compare ‘here’ with ‘there’, ‘after’ with ‘before’. This interactive e-book includes sound pieces extracted from the interviews, where the women’s own voices add depth to the power of their words.

The Myth of Return goes behind the shocking experiences of prison, violence or privation that make headlines, to explore quieter feelings and memories. Through the work of the artists who have created this project, we are privileged to gain some understanding of the unique perspective through which these women of dual heritage experience the world.
