A missing baby. A teenage mother suspected of murder. A jaded detective whose reputation is on the line. A signing gorilla destined for the auction block. A scientist who is about to lose everything. Will the revelation that a gorilla is the only witness to the crime save or doom everyone involved?
Neema, the fictional signing gorilla, is based on information from books and films about Koko, the real signing gorilla.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Convincingly rendered human and animal characters fill this fast-paced novel of greed, pathos, and tenderness. When naive 17-year-old Brittany's baby, Ivy, is kidnapped, embittered but empathetic detective Finn investigates. He begins to lose hope for Ivy, but a witness finally steps forth. The problem? The witness is Neema, a trained gorilla whose repeated testimony delivered in sign language causes a significant media stir and impels Grace McKenna, a scientist working with the ape, to help Finn unravel the mystery. Beason has written a taut and fascinating novel. She weaves intelligence and compassion into this dark descent into emotional bankruptcy and betrayal. Complex psychological histories make Finn and Mckenna fully developed characters with valid motivations. Wading into controversial themes, this rollicking thriller touches on human trafficking, teen pregnancy, and the role of animals in the lives of people.

The Only Witness
A very interesting read. Wonderful characters. Reminds me of Koko and that there can be meaningful communication between species. Looking forward to reading #2!
I love animals more than humans
I loved learning about the Gorillas I believe they do understand… I didn’t like teenagers pregnant I believe that’ schools teach them about protection
Very Engaging!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, from start to finish. A nice fast-moving pace kept me engaged. Looking forward to the next “Neema” adventure!
