The Scorpio Races

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Shiver and Linger comes a brand new, heartstopping novel. Some race to win. Others race to survive. It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die. At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them. Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn't given her much of a choice. So she enters the competition - the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen. As she did in her bestselling Shiver trilogy, author Maggie Stiefvater takes us to the breaking point, where both love and life meet their greatest obstacles, and only the strong of heart can survive. The Scorpio Races is an unforgettable reading experience.

From Publishers Weekly

Aug 22, 2011 – In her closing notes, Stiefvater (the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy) calls this a book about killer horses terrifying faerie creatures that eat meat and seek to drown humans and, in virtually the same breath, says that it isn t really about water horses. She s right on both counts. On the island of Thisby, the Scorpio Races are held every November, when the driven or the crazy ride the beaches on the backs of these mounts. Sean Kendrick does it for love, winning year after year on the stallion Corr; Puck Connolly, pitting her ordinary horse against the killers, does it out of desperation, to win money to keep her home and to earn respect from her older brother, who threatens to desert the family. Stiefvater s narration is as much about atmospherics as it is about event, and the water horses are the environment in which Sean and Puck move, allies and rivals to the end. It s not a feel-good story dread, loss, and hard choices are the islanders lot. As a study of courage and loyalty tested, however, it is an utterly compelling read. Ages 13 up.

Customer Reviews

Love this!

I love this book, Words cannot express how amazing and captivating this book is! I have read it around three or four times and every time it seems like it gets better. Definitely worth it.

Perfectly Halcyon

This is a truly amazing read. It is beautiful, sad, and slightly wrenches the heart in only the way excellent prose and endearing characters can. The magic, the tension, the protagonists, the older feel of the world and the belief that the young can carve out a beautiful and strong world of their own makes this novel a bright spot in YA fiction. I wish I could recommend the author's other more popular works, but this is her best yet. I hope she continues in this vein. Also, I'm pretty sure her editor's got to be the bomb to help pull this together. Thank you, whomever you are.

Scorpio races <3

ABSOLUTE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD from a horse lovers view this captures the magic of horses but isn't one of the those horse books (which are horrible) The characters are completely alive and are bold and go father than almost any other book I've read the thought and cleverness in the book and story makes me wish I could go to Thisby because I know I would never live because my heart wouldn't allow it this book sits on my self well worn because every month or so I reread because the magic of the books comes alive again and again no matter how many times u read it so people get this book because it will change your world <3
