Kerrigan Byrne’s The Scot Beds His Wife

From the American Wild West, Samantha Masters has
taken on the identity of Scottish heiress Alison Ross.
They met during a train robbery when Samantha’s
husband was going to murder Alison. Sam shoots and
kills her husband. Now both the gang members and
law will be on her trail. But Alison thankful for Sam’s
intervention and saving her life has a solution. Alison
has a property in Scotland that she will have to forfeit
until she lives on the property for one year. Alison
persuades Sam to take on her identity and live on the
property.
Gavin St. James is the Earl of Thorne. He wants to
break away of his notoriously, cruel family. A player with
a reputation, he needs the Ross land to raise cattle and
farm to be able to change his living style. He never
expected Alison (Samantha) to return to her property.
Now she is back and he is totally unprepared for the
woman who returns. There is immediate undeniable
chemistry between the two but stubbornness seems
to prevail.
An interesting historical Victorian fictional story with
deeply filled characters filled with childhood horrors
trying to break free of the past to be able to walk
without baggage into unknown future. They both want
to be loved for themselves but will they be able to
overcome the deceitful set back life has thrown their way.
A well created plot with sexual tension and a cast of
well developed, colorful secondary characters.
This is book # in the Victorian Rebels series. It was the
first one I read. I had no trouble following the characters
as the author wove the past and present together
effortlessly.
I volunteered to read The Scot Beds His Wife. Thanks
to St Martin’s Press via NetGalley for the opportunity.
My opinion is my own.

Not as good....

I have read all the Kerrigan Byrne books here on iBooks and loved them, but this one just didn’t hold my interest.

I was bored about half-way through and barely skimmed the rest of it. Gavin wasn’t a very well developed character especially after reading the prologue and Sam was, quite frankly, boring especially after what she had been through. Yes, she was capable and tough and could swear like a sailor but so what? She wasn’t portrayed well. She wasn’t relatable or likeable or neither of these. Just blah.

The plot didn’t move along well and it was very far-fetched and unbelievable. Really the whole time frame was off too. To go from Wyoming to the Highlands of Scotland in the 1880’s took less than a month? And that the Masters brothers could track her that fast? Just not a reality.

Maybe the Alison/Callum story will be better.

Lady E

This is the fifth Book in the series by Kerrigan Byrne. It seems a shame that she has to use the F word so frequently that unfortunately it makes the book vulgar and debased, making it unrealistic of the period. During the 19th Century that word was not in existence other than in the lowest echelon of society, and even then rarly used. The shaking of hands was not in use either for fear distribution of germs, until after World War Two, particularly in England. It is such a pity that Miss Byrne does not sufficient reasearch to make this evaluation. Otherwise the book is entertaining.
