The Tide of War

Book 2, The Nathan Peake Novels - A Nathan Peake Novel

This book can be downloaded and read in iBooks on your Mac or iOS device.

Description

When the tide of war is on the rise, telling friend from foe is a dangerous proposition. It’s 1794, and newly promoted Captain Nathan Peake is dispatched to the Caribbean to take command of the British navy’s latest frigate, the 32-gun Unicorn, a ship with a tragic history of mutiny and murder. Indeed, her previous captain was found washed up in New Orleans with his throat cut, and the men who did it are still at large. But Peake has greater problems to deal with: he must find the French war ship Virginie—sent to the region to spread war, rebellion and mayhem—and stop her at any cost. Along the way, he confronts the seductive charms of La Princesa Negra, the witch queen of the Army of Lucumi, and falls victim to the dangerous intrigues of the American agent Gilbert Imlay.

From Publishers Weekly

Sep 13, 2010 – Hunter, pseudonym of British writer/filmmaker Paul Bryers, delivers another slick nautical adventure (after The Time of Terror) in the Patrick O'Brian tradition. In 1794, Nathan Peake is promoted to post captain by the British Admiralty and assumes charge of the Unicorn, a frigate whose previous captain was butchered by Irish mutineers. Nathan's difficult mission is twofold: locate and sink the Virginie, a French frigate terrorizing the Caribbean, and support the crown's Spanish allies in suppressing a slave insurrection. As Nathan's fears of helming the "cursed and doomed" Unicorn mount, he makes few shipboard friends, is haunted by memories of his executed lover, and is saddled with an opportunistic and shifty political adviser. The rousing naval battles, twisty plot, and muscular prose lift Hunter's nautical yarn a few notches above the competition.
