Jefferson Nighthawk is the Widowmaker, the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy. Or rather, he was, until he came down with a fatal disease a century ago. Since that time he has been cryogenically frozen until a cure can be found – but now inflation has eaten away at his fortune, and he is about to be awakened from his expensive surroundings and cast out. At the last second, an offer comes in from a distant Frontier world: if they’ll clone the Widowmaker and have the clone do a job for them, a job only the Widowmaker can do, they’ll pay enough to keep him alive and frozen until a cure is achieved.
The clone is created, and trained in all the arts of killing and self-defense. He has all of the Widowmaker’s skills and abilities in a deadly, 23-year-old body…but none of his experiences. Can he stockpile some wisdom before his innocence and ignorance kills them both – the clone and the original?
Find the answers in this powerful story by 5-time Hugo winner Mike Resnick.
“Although billed as the first book in the Widowmaker Trilogy, the book stands on its own, just as the novels of Resnick's earlier series each can stand on their own.” – SF Site
“Mike makes science fiction fun, while never forgetting that there needs to be a genuine point to his stories.” – Analog
“Mike Resnick is one of the most daring and prolific writers in all of science fiction – he always delivers!” – David Brin
“Mike Resnick knows what science fiction readers mean by entertainment.” – Algis J. Budrys
“Nobody spins a yarn better than Mike Resnick.” – Orson Scott Card
Probably his best series...
Please don't let my rating deter you from reading this book. I only gave it 3 stars because I feel like the next two books in the series give you the real feel for who the Widowmaker is instead of who everyone thinks he was as this book did. This series and the two book Santiago series are in my opinion his absolutely best works.
