A classically-styled spy-thriller set in our present day poses hard questions of our future
Book Two of Matt Gemmell’s KESTREL series is a fantastic successor to his premiere novel, CHANGER. As Gemmell’s writing has matured so has the KESTREL team. They are a more cohesive team, and their solid relationship and devotion to each other shines throughout the pages.
TOLL has an excellent blend of espionage, thrill-inducing chases and combat, and a villain you almost find yourself rooting for. Almost.
Gemmell is keen to keep the story rooted in the world presently around us, posing hard questions about how humanity is doing as the caretakers of this planet we call home. He also draws upon historical fact and lore to accentuate the story and pose an imminent threat, while also keeping a distant threat in view.
TOLL was a page-turner, and the story unfolds without giving too much away too early on.
