“Shaken not stirred,” we have all heard the saying. It is part of what makes Ian Fleming’s super spy James Bond so super. It is not the fact that he drinks martinis, it is how he drinks them that matters. Cocktails are about style and in today’s complicated world of drink many of us need a lifestyle guide. 20 Years Behind Bars is that guide; part trade manual and part psychological introspective, it combines real life observations (by a real life bartender) with facts and information in an amusing and irreverent fashion. Take one part Mr. Boston’s bartending guide, one part Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential, a dash of Steve Dublanica’s Waiter Rant, combine and you have the pure entertainment that is 20 Years Behind Bars.

Original, Refreshing and Ridiculously Entertaining

What a book! Jeff really does combine wittiness with his extraordinary style of writing. I was always entertained, intrigued, and enjoyed every page. I do hope we continue to see more of Jeff. I regularly enjoyed his column in the Marin Independent Journal as well. I propose a toast to you Jeff, wonderful job and to many more! Cheers!

What a fabulous book. Brilliant writing about the most popular social pastime in the world, drinking. Twenty years behind bars will have you laughing at the absurdities that belly up for a cocktail. This one is not to be missed.

Jeff Burkhart's "Twenty Years Behind Bars" is a clever glimpse into a world most of us are unaware of from a customer standpoint. Funny and full of insight, Burkhart's writing is a kind of reportage from behind the imaginary fourth wall. With the bar itself as proscenium arch! I love his stories!
