Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A standalone thriller featuring a “tough-talking, scarred heroine”* from the author of the Temperance Brennan series, the basis for the hit TV show Bones.

Meet Sunday Night, a woman with physical and psychological scars, and a killer instinct. . . .

Sunnie has spent years running from her past, burying secrets and building a life in which she needs no one and feels nothing. But a girl has gone missing, lost in the chaos of a bomb explosion, and the family needs Sunnie’s help. Is the girl dead? Did someone take her? If she is out there, why doesn’t she want to be found?

It’s time for Sunnie to face her own demons—because they just might lead her to the truth about what really happened all those years ago.

From Publishers Weekly

May 01, 2017 – Sunday Night, the star of this fast-paced series launch from bestseller Reichs (Speaking in Bones and 17 other Temperance Brennan forensic thrillers), retreats to isolated Goat Island near Charleston, S.C., after an injury ends her police career. As a child, she barely escaped from a cult that claimed her mother's life. Concerned about her well-being, her former foster father, cop Perry "Beau" Beaumonde, entices her out of seclusion by asking her to look for a teenage girl whose wealthy grandmother believes she was kidnapped by a cult. Sunday enlists her twin brother, August ("Gus"), in a search that leads to Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., in pursuit of homegrown terrorists. Reichs sacrifices character development for unrelenting action, but Brennan fans should appreciate Sunday a self-sufficient, tough-talking, scarred heroine and the unquestioningly loyal, quietly lethal Gus. An explosive finale at the Kentucky Derby seems designed for the big screen.

Great reading!

This was not a Brennan book in any way. Sunday Night, the protagonist is a PI who is a very troubled individual. I will not go into why because of spoilers, but it is fully explained in the novel. Her cohort, Gus, is also her twin. The story begins with a bomb going off on the north side of Chicago. Among those killed are a woman and her son. Her young daughter has disappeared. Sunnie is hired by their Grandmother to "get" the people who set off the bomb and find her granddaughter. Her investigation takes you from Charlotte to Chicago to Los Angeles to Louisville. Lots of action and mayhem throughout the novel. It was excellent weekend reading and I hope the author writes more of Sunnie and Gus' adventures. Thanks to Net Galley and Bantam Books for an ARC for an honest review.

Great read

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review. I have to say that Sunday Night is quite a change from Temperance Brennan, but in a good way.

This book actually tells two stories, but the POV on the second story isn't confirmed until the end and makes it more gripping. Sunday has been hired by a local well-to-do grandmother to locate her missing grandchild. The woman's daughter and grandson were killed in a school bombing, and the granddaughter has been missing ever since.

There are numerous twists and turns throughout this story, terrorists and crisscrossing country. Definitely worth the read.
