White Cat

Book 1, The Curse Workers

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

Cassel comes from a shady, magical family of con artists and grifters. He doesn’t fit in at home or at school, so he’s used to feeling like an outsider. He’s also used to feeling guilty—he killed his best friend, Lila, years ago.

But when Cassel begins to have strange dreams about a white cat, and people around him are losing their memories, he starts to wonder what really happened to Lila. In his search for answers, he discovers a wicked plot for power that seems certain to succeed. But Cassel has other ideas—and a plan to con the conmen.

From Publishers Weekly

Apr 12, 2010 – In this beautifully realized dark fantasy, which launches Black s Curse Workers series, Cassel Sharpe is a talented con artist who works as a bookie at his snooty prep school. But skilled as Cassel is, it s nothing compared to the rest of his family, who are curse workers, able to control people s memories, luck, or emotions with the touch of a finger (curse work is illegal, and all citizens wear gloves to safeguard against being taken advantage of). Three years ago Cassel murdered a friend, the daughter of a crime lord, and now, not by coincidence, he s having nightmares about a white cat ( It leaned over me, inhaling sharply, as if it was going to suck the breath from my lungs ) and sleepwalking on the roof of his dormitory. Complex plots unfold around Cassel, and he eventually realizes that he can t even rely on his own memory. With prose that moves from stark simplicity to almost surreal intensity in a moment, Black (Ironside) has created a believable alternate America where mobsters are magicians and no one is entirely trustworthy. Ages 14 up.

Amazing, BUY IT

I read this book in 2 days and bought the others as soon as I finished. I only wish there were a thousand books so I could read them forever. I only put this down at 4 in the morning because I couldn't keep my eyes open. If you don't have it BUY IT

She's Chicka-Chicka Back!

Holly Black. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back because you, my friend, are awesome. I thought, a book from a male's point of view? I don't know... I find most authors can't write in another gender's voice convincingly. I take it back. White Cat and Libba Bray's Going Bovine have made me eat my words. If you're unsure about buying this book, do it.

Unpredictable and fantastic

The book was alluring and exciting. I was pleasantly surprised when I predicted many things wrongly. Many stories are pretty predictable -- not always a bad thing -- but it is fun to be kept guessing. It was refreshing to read a book that mixes magic, action and romance in a whole new way.

The second book is just as fun. I can't wait for the third one. I plan to try Holly Black's Tithe while I wait for the third book to come out in April.

Book recommendation: if you like this series, you might like Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely series.
