From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of It Ends With Us and November 9 comes a moving and haunting novel of family, love, and the power of the truth.
“Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.”
The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.
Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines, when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.
Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.
Poignant and powerful, Without Merit explores the layers of lies that tie a family together and the power of love and truth.
Cheesus Christ, this book is absolute PERFECTION!!!
Colleen Hoover has done it again—she just blew me out of the freaking water. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting from this book, but it certainly wasn't that. This woman—this author just continues to prove how much of an incredible storyteller she is—sharing such a heartfelt, emotional and eye-opening tale that warrants a well-deserved trophy. I still feel like I got run over by a mack truck with the boatload of feels that this book rained down on me.
Without Merit isn't just about a girl with a completely dysfunctional family, living in an odd house that used to be a church called Dollar Voss. It's not just about a teenage girl falling for a boy she can't have. For me, what took the spotlight in this book was the way it tackled such a huge issue we tend to ignore or neglect nowadays. It made me contemplate my own standpoint in life. Of my family. My friends. All the people around me. At the end of it all, I just feel like my heart's about to burst. This story was heartbreaking, yet so beautiful and remarkably composed. Every thing that happened had quite a significance that would either leave a mark or have you thinking long after the book is over.
Colleen, I applaud you for writing yet another book that shines light on something every single one of us needs to be aware of. Something we can't open our eyes to enough. For using your masterful talent in reaching out and using your readers as a channel to spreading awareness regarding this. I felt it. I felt all of it. And I'll forever be grateful to you for writing this.
The most endearing CoHo book of all! The characters are so well developed and the plot is stellar. I could read about dollar Voss forever and was heartbroken when the book ended. I 100% recommend everyone read this!
Worth the Wait
This book is one to reread again and again. A beautiful, funny, and heart wrenching story with a house full of characters. I loved every moment of reading this book. Colleen Hoover has a gift of weaving art with her writing and I am in awe of her talent.
