Sweetness alert!!! This book had me sighing with happiness.
Jake is struggling with the consequences of an accident that happened years ago that ended his college football career and dealing with an amputated leg. He meets Paige waitressing at a diner who happens to have a daughter with an amputated leg as well. Paige has also not had the best of childhoods so she's very cautious when it comes to her daughter. The attraction between Jake and Paige is instant but since both of them are dealing with their own struggles, they take it very slow.
The love story between Jake and Paige is very beautiful but the best parts in this book is the interaction between Jake and 4 year old Casey. It will melt your heart!
This is a pretty low angst book that has no cheating or ow/om drama. This is a beautiful love story of three partially broken people who come together and make each other whole again.

Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Not as fond of this cover as previous ones from the series. Model is thinner than how I'd envisioned him based on the descriptions in the book, pose is awkward. He appears to either be in pain and anguish or he's appealing to the higher power will every fiber of his being. That said, I'd fallen HARD for his brother Matt, then grew attached to his brother Stephan. I'd been looking forward to this story, based on it's synopsis as well as it being next in the series.
Paige is a single mother working two jobs, taking a class or two when she can to work towards bettering the lives of her sweet and special daughter and herself. Currently sharing a two bedroom, run down trailer with her cousin, she longs to give Casey so much more. JT - or Jake, as he introduces himself to her as - is the youngest of the McKinney siblings, coming along much later in life. He's always looked up to his brothers, but felt lacking -- never more-so than after a life-altering accident the night of Matt and Abby's wedding.
JT separated himself from his family after the accident, finally ending up in California - from the family's Virginia homestead, so do not expect a whole lot of McKinneys on the sidelines in this one until much later in the book. Jake and Paige slowly come together with the help of Casey and her cousin, Jenny, but they both have their insecurities and doubts on how a relationship would or could ever work. Their chemistry is nearly tangible, but he's so careful and cautious, recognizing her guarded and wary stance of men and relationships. Casey's physicality catches and holds JT and he almost immediately wants to take her under his wing, for obvious reasons. JT's co-workers, Simon (a big, Samoan double-amputee war vet) and Lynn (married and 9-months pregnant) pretty much round out the immediate cast.
The dialogue is smart, fun, emotional, both characters having been through so much at a still young age. The interaction is believable. The plot is engaging and dynamic. Claudia Connor's writing style is fantastic. If I would have had a less hectic schedule, I probably would have read this in one sitting. Instead, I had to force myself to put it down a few times. The conflicts presented were all self-imposed, based on past life experiences that they needed to get over - which they finally do, leading the reader to a solid and satisfying ending, even if it felt a little abrupt. Predictability was mild.
Overall, I really did enjoy this installment of the series. I loved Casey's vitality and how it seemed to being JT to life. JT coming back to life and bonding with Casey starts lowering Paige's walls, so it's a chain reaction all brought on by an "almost 5" yr old girl with a zest for life. Her questions and random comments were so much fun.

I've done nothing all day but read...
I couldn't put it down! I didn't think I could love a character more than Matt (Worth the Fall), but my love for Jake is at least a tie. These three books by Claudia Connor are all gems. I'm ready for her next book. In the meantime, I will read this one again. But, I have to start with Worth the Fall & read all three in order.
