You Can Draw the Way You Feel is a book that was first
conceived in 1975 through working with children ages 4 to 7.
Artist/Inventor Nancy Burson invited a few hundred students from
various NYC schools to draw their feelings instead of what they see.
It was Burson's exploration of the natural artist within all children, removing the expectation that they needed to create perfectly rendered images at a time in their development when that is impossible.
What emerged are wondrous abstract drawings emulating those created by the world's foremost artists. Burson's intuitive practice of teaching children to draw by accessing their feelings is an expansive way for both children and adults to uncover the natural artists they already are.
Burson preserved the drawings in the hope that someday You Can Draw the Way You Feel would come to light. Now, over three decades later, we have interactive books allowing readers to participate and create drawings of their own feelings!
The works resulting from Burson's methodology echo some of the very best of abstract art. You Can Draw the Way You Feel also acts as a form of art therapy, dealing with the emotive aspects of the self that psychologists know to be therapeutic.
Built into the book is a beautiful drawing app, allowing users to immediately draw the way they feel. Drawings can be shared by using screen grabs to save them to the iPad's camera roll.
