Zeroes

A Novel

This book can be downloaded and read in Apple Books on your Mac or iOS device.

Description

Five hackers—an Anonymous-style rabble-rouser, an Arab Spring hacktivist, a black-hat hacker, an old-school cipherpunk, and an online troll—are detained by the U.S. government, forced to work as white-hat hackers for Uncle Sam in order to avoid federal prison. At a secret complex known only as "the Lodge," where they will spend the next year working as an elite cyber-espionage team, these misfits dub themselves "the Zeroes."

But once the Zeroes begin to work, they uncover secrets that would make even the most dedicated conspiracy theorist's head spin. And soon they're not just trying to serve their time, they're also trying to perform the ultimate hack: burrowing deep into the U.S. government from the inside, and hoping they'll get out alive. Packed with electric wit and breakneck plot twists, Zer0es is an unforgettable thrill ride through the seedy underbelly of "progress."

From Publishers Weekly

May 18, 2015 – Wendig (Blackbirds) piles on the thrills and chills in this fast-paced near-future novel about human frailty and inhuman ambition. Five American hackers grabbed by the Feds are given a choice: a jail sentence, or a job working on a secret NSA program run by the mysterious Typhon. The diverse hackers a morally indifferent thrill seeker, an activist hacking for the Arab Spring, a teen vigilante, a multitalented smart-ass who steals in order to escape the streets, and an aging conspiracy theorist are united only by their lack of trust in one another and the government. Their suspicions about the government's motives increase when their individual missions, breaking into the computers of different companies, start to feel connected. Now the hackers need to figure out Typhon's true identity and motivation, preferably before Typhon is done using them. While the major revelations are easy to see coming, Wendig wields the tools of suspense and tension with skill. His large cast of characters is entertaining, the moments of horror are sharp and chilling, and the story races to a breathless conclusion. This is a promising opening to a new series for SF thriller fans.

Reasonable

I’m not a big fan of reading books, but decided to buy this because it was recommended on iBooks and I tend to enjoy adventure/mystery/thriller novels. This book is a little bit of a let down if you enjoy reading brain-intensive intriguing novels, but if you are just looking to pass time, it took me around 2-3 hours to fnish. The plotline isn’t extremely complex and the writing is easy to understand. The main issue I had with the book was that the writing was merely on par with that of a high-school student. The ideas were too simple and seemed like something I would read in a piece of fanfiction rather than a book selling on the iBooks store. Maybe I’m too picky, but this novel made me feel like I was going through the motions of reading a book rather than actually being drawn into the plot. It feels like a book written for those aged <15 years old but in my opinion includes some notions inappropriate for those age groups. Maybe if you’re the type to read one book a year because you’re too lazy to read/ hate reading, then this book is not too bad because it kinda puts you in a vegetable-like state.

MR. ROBOT
