Excellent contemporaneous observation.
Excellent glimpse of late 19th century South Africa. For those of us heretofore not well acquainted with Zulu history, or the origins of British involvement in that region, this will be instructive. The author does his best to paint an accurate picture of the people, landscape, and political environment immediately "post Zulu".
As one who enjoys frontier history on any "front", the book provided a great deal of historical excitement. More importantly, it has provided a first-hand observation of a war-torn region, and offers something of a scaffold upon which we may understand the more recent South Africa and its inherent difficulties.
