Course Description

Students begin this unit by researching the Solar System with an emphasis on Earth, Sun, and Moon. Then, students are presented with primary and secondary sources regarding the Solar System. Students demonstrate what they have learned by collaborating with each other to create an ePub about the Solar System.

RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
RI.4.7 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g. in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.
RI.4.8 Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in text.
RI.4.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational text, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 4-5 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
SL.4.5 Add audio recordings and visual displays to presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.
W.4.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. 
W.4.6 With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others.
W.4.7 Conduct short research projects that build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic.

E.ST.04.11 Identify the sun and moon as common objects in the sky.
E.ST.04.21 Describe the orbit of the Earth around the sun as it defines a year.
E.ST.04.25 Describe the apparent movement of the sun and moon across the sky through day/night and seasons.

Learning about space is fun. This course had good apps, videos and books. I really liked it.

Solar System Report

We like the Solar System course a lot, we like the course because it has lots of fun pictures and videos. It makes it fun to learn about our Solar System. There are lots of books that have lots of information in them and we love to read them because it's fun. We can learn about every planet and star in our Solar System by just reading one book and doing all of it's activities. Fourth graders, Madison, Megan, and Mia
