6th Grade English
by Oklahoma State School Boards Assoc
This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.
This 6th grade ELA course
was designed to provide Oklahoma teachers with digital content resources to
support the OAS standards. Each standard has multiple digital resources that
can be modified. The digital resources include Apple apps, websites, links to
multimedia resources, and other open educational resources.
Eight overarching standards, the College- and Career- Ready
English Language Arts standards, identify the knowledge and skills of the
discipline that PK-12 students are to learn; each standard for every grade is
delineated at the appropriate level.
A PK-12 vertical progression of standards, organized by the
eight overarching standards, allows for educators to recognize how all the
standards are intertwined to develop the total literacy of a student. When a
skill is no longer present, mastery is implied; however, teachers must support
previous grade level skills according to the mastery level of their students.
This grade-to-grade, standard-by-standard progression can be viewed in a
horizontal format, organized into overlapping grade bands.
The progression of language arts learning from pre-kindergarten
through high school should reflect a grade-level appropriate relationship
between the level of critical thinking students use and the actual listening,
speaking, reading, and writing experiences students have. There are 8
specific standards for ELA and many supporting objectives under each standard.
The 8 standards include Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing Process, Critical
Reading and Writing, Vocabulary, Language, Research, Multimodal Literacies, and
Independent Reading and Writing. These standards and their objectives should be
taught together (bundled) instead of in isolation. Many of the online resources
will assist in the bundled process.

|2||The heart of happy hollow||This is a story book. Happy Hollow; are you wondering where it is? Wherever Negroes colonise in the cities or villages, north or south, wherever the hod carrier, the porter, and the waiter are the society men of the town; wherever the picnic and the excursion are the chief summer diversion, and the revival the winter time of repentance, wherever the cheese cloth veil obtains at a wedding, and the little white hearse goes by with black mourners in the one carriage behind, there -- is Happy Hollow. Wherever laughter and tears rub elbows day by day, and the spirit of labour and laziness shake hands, there--there--is Happy Hollow, and of some of it may the following pages show the heart.||--||Free||View in iTunes|

|8||Journey to the Center of the Earth||"The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived." — Arthur C. Clarke An adventurous geology professor chances upon a manuscript in which a 16th-century explorer claims to have found a route to the earth's core. Professor Lidenbrock can't resist the opportunity to investigate, and with his nephew Axel, he sets off across Iceland in the company of Hans Bjelke, a native guide. The expedition descends into an extinct volcano toward a sunless sea, where they encounter a subterranean world of luminous rocks, antediluvian forests, and fantastic marine life — a living past that holds the secrets to the origins of human existence. Originally published in 1864, Jules Verne's classic remains critically acclaimed for its style and imaginative visions. Verne wrote many fantasy stories that later proved remarkably prescient, and his distinctive combination of realism and romanticism exercised a lasting influence on writers as diverse as Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Jean-Paul Sartre. In addition to the excitement of an action novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth has the added appeal of a psychological quest, in which the sojourn itself is as significant as the ultimate destination.||--||$0.99||View in iTunes|
