Course Description

6th grade science is a general science exploration into the basics of Earth, life, and physical sciences. In the Earth sciences we look at human impact on the environment and the water cycle. In the life sciences we work to understand the basics cycles of matter and energy in ecosystems, cells as the basic unit of life, and factors that effect the health and populations of ecosystems. In the physical sciences we investigate the relationships between kinetic and potential energy, the relationship between kinetic energy and temperature, and forces that act at a distance.

This course is designed to align with the Oklahoma State Standards for Biology. The standards are arranged in bundles based on the OK Framework to correspond to specific topics or concepts. The bundles are further broken down to categorize different learning strategies.  

This course is meant to be used to easily access a variety of digital resources personally curated by biology teachers. Apps, videos, digital textbooks, websites and interactive activities have been researched and tested by the curating teachers. These resources can be used to supplement classroom resources and encourage engagement from students.

Students in middle school develop understanding of key concepts to help them make sense of the life sciences. These ideas build upon students’ science understanding from earlier grades and from the disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts of other experiences with physical and Earth sciences. There are five life science topics in middle school: (1) Structure, Function, and Information Processing; (2) Growth, Development, and Reproduction of Organisms; (3) Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems; (4) Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems; and (5) Natural Selection and Adaptations. The performance expectations in middle school blend core ideas with science and engineering practices and crosscutting concepts to support students in developing useable knowledge across the science disciplines. While the performance expectations in middle school life sciences couple practices with specific disciplinary core ideas, instructional decisions should include the use of many science and engineering practices integrated in the performance expectations.

This course is meant to be used to easily access a variety of content digital resources personally curated by Oklahoma science teachers.  Lesson plans, hands-on activities, applications, videos, digital textbooks, websites, and interactive activities have been researched and tested for classroom use.  These resources can be used to supplement classroom resources and encourage engagement from students.
