Course Description

Course Overview:
PHSC 1014 is a course that satisfies the general education physical science requirement at Arkansas State University.  Unlike the other courses that satisfy this requirement, this is not a survey course that covers a broad range of topics from the breadth of physical sciences.  Instead, this course takes an in-depth look at energy and issues associated with it: what is it, how it is extracted from various sources, how can it be transferred into usable forms, what effects its usage has on the environment, and what is the projected use of it in the future.  Students will be expected to compare energy sources and resources in terms of their environmental and economic impacts and to make qualitative and quantitative decisions based upon these comparisons.

This course is also different in that the laboratory section is integrated directly into the online section, with activities occurring online and in the field.  The lab activities are based upon each student's individual lifestyle and will allow each person to make educated decisions about their own energy use.  A major component of the lab is the performance of a home energy audit wherein students will develop a list of improvements that could be made to their dwelling in an economically feasible manner.
