Course Description

Taught by Chris W. Surprenant, assistant professor of philosophy at the University of New Orleans and director of the Alexis de Tocqueville Project in Law, Liberty, and Morality.

Designed for non-philosophy majors and students, this course is an introduction to moral theory and applied ethics, paying particular attention to issues related to ethics and the environment. The first part of the course focuses on three core ethical theories: virtue ethics, deontological ethics, and consequentialist ethics. The remainder of the course focuses on a careful reading of Peter Singer’s Practical Ethics.

Covers a lot of ground (pun intended)

This introduction lays the groundwork (more puns intended) for what must be an engaging and practical discussion of the ethical questions that we face and that especially young people will face in dealing with problems of climate change.
