Genesis through Joshua - Dr. Richard Belcher

by Reformed Theological Seminary

This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.

Course Description

In this course, Dr. Belcher introduces the early biblical history of Israel as recorded in the first five books of the Bible (the Pentateuch) and continued in the conquest period.  Dr. Belcher brings together historical and linguistic features of the original context with the interpretive interests and questions facing modern OT scholarship.  Genesis through Joshua traces prominent thematic developments in the Pentateuch narrative, demonstrating a biblical and exegetical basis for a Reformed approach to main theological categories such as the covenant, the church, and eschatology.  Students will benefit from overviews of debated topics in the church today, including views on creation, hermeneutics, and the historicity of the Exodus and conquest narratives.

Customer Reviews

Most of the first two lectures consisted of Dr. Belcher bashing competing theories of Biblical authorship to "prove" his views were correct, rather than focusing on the text and message itself. Given some of his comments that the early Bible texts repeats itself because "they liked it" rather than considering those portions come from an oral tradition that predates the transcription of the texts only adds to my disappointment of what could have been a promising lecture on a vital religious text.
