Course Description

Welcome to an informative and thorough discussion on Human Trafficking! This course will provide a comprehensive discourse on domestic and global human trafficking.  This will be done by examining various forms of human trafficking from a social justice lens.

As primary forms most often recognized across the world, sex and labor trafficking will start off the course, but other various forms will also be explored. The instructor of this course embraces the view that human trafficking is a gross violation of human rights and a form of modern day slavery. To put it bluntly, it is an UNACCEPTABLE form of community violence in its most egregious form!!!

Please allow me to give you a context for my abhorrence towards human trafficking.  Can you imagine taking a job and then finding out it is something completely different than what you expected? Can you imagine working for free?  Can you imagine working six to seven days a week without a vacation?   Can you imagine working for someone who refuses to allow you to leave the grounds or the facility?  Can you imagine working a job that you hate but are unable to quit due to threats on your life? Can you imagine being beaten by your employer? Worst yet, can you imagine witnessing your employer savagely mutilating or killing a fellow employee because they showed the slightest ounce of resistance to his or her oppression? Can you imagine being trafficked? Well, the reality is that millions of people who live as trafficked persons never imagined these things either or that they, personally, would be subjected to these conditions.

So, who are these traffickers?  Are they obvious to the onlooker?  Do they even see themselves as traffickers?  Traffckers vary and they are rarely obvious to an onlooker. In fact not all traffickers even see themselves as traffickers.  Some see themselves as entrepreneurs, regular employers, the guy next door, a person carrying out his or her cultural norms, and even as lovers to the people they hold hostage. The fact remains, traffickers are widespread and include organized crime networks, corrupt government officials, peace keeping forces, military personnel, cult groups, fetish priests, pimps, "business" men/women, formerly trafficked persons, and sometimes family members of trafficked persons.

It is the hope of this instructor that the content of this course will allow each of us to become informed enough to identify a trafficked victim and then care enough or to be brave enough to become involved by calling the Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-3737-888 or even a local law enforcement agency to report it.   It is my sincerest hope that you--"yes YOU"--will be compelled to do something to free every woman, girl, boy, and man in this world.
