Course Description

Are we alone in the Universe? This course is focused on the scientific endeavour to answer this question and other related puzzles: How did life originate on Earth? What conditions are requried for life on other worlds? How can we search for life on distant planets? 
The field of Astrobiology sits at the interface of Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science. This course provides an overview of these fields and their relevance to the scientific persuit of discovering life on other worlds. Some topics covered include
  • The emergence of life on the Earth 
  • Life on Mars and throughout the Solar System 
  • The search for habitable worlds and life around other stars in our Galaxy.
  • Extraterrestrial intelligence 
We will learn about promising new techniques to search for signs of life on distant planets, techniques that may come to fruition in the next 10-20 years.
