Developing iPad Applications for Visualization and Insight

Course Description

This course will focus on the design and implementation of iPad applications that help users visualize and make sense of large data sets. Course content will bridge theory and practice, giving students a basic background in visualization and the cognitive processes involved in transforming visual representations into mental representations, insight and discovery; and showing how to implement these techniques in real applications for the iPad. Industry iOS developers will teach the software engineering topics, focusing on the latest technologies available in the newly released iOS 5. Prior programming experience is required, and object-oriented programming experience is recommended.

Nicely DONE!

Great introduction!

Please put down your coffee.

As with most things in life, there is an appropriate time for drinking coffee. If you are in the middle of a lecture attempting to formulate a complete thought then please put down your coffee and finish the thought. The Stanford University iOS lessons are so much better because the speaker has obviously rehearsed what he's going to say. It leads to a much more fluid lesson. So please drink your 16 oz. coffee beforehand and then add an ounce of preparation to improve the delivery of this material.

Good course "Model", but course "View" could be improved

The lecturers clearly know their subject. I appreciated the chance to reinforce some concepts and to pick up several useful new ones, especially re: data visualization.

I believe, however, that the presentation could/should be enhanced. I'd recommend studying Paul Hegarty's (Stanford) very informative and very smooth delivery: Above all, he seems much better prepared. (Maybe that's owed to repetition.)

Also, I had trouble hearing most of the questions from the class. Like the Stanford course, it would be very useful for the instructor, after hearing the question, to repeat a distilled version of it for the iTunes U auditors.

(Maybe it's a small thing, but, for me, re-hydrating every 5 to 10 minutes during a presentation became distracting enough that it started to detract from the course content.)

I'd bet that the prez will be improved the next time the course is recorded. I'd check it out again
