Writing Theses & Dissertations

by The Ohio State University

This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.

Course Description

EDUTL 6913 is a writing course designed for masters and doctoral students who need assistance with the composing and writing stages of their thesis or dissertation. Some lessons may also be useful for those still in the proposal stage.

This course addresses the general genre and discourse features of a dissertation and its traditional chapters (introduction, review of literature, methodology, results, and conclusion). It includes tips, suggestions, and lessons to help the student develop a more effective dissertation writing process and suitable writing/research strategies to succeed in this major undertaking. Because the course is mainly intended for international students, there is a module addressing language and grammar issues typically encountered when writing certain parts and chapters of the thesis/dissertation.

This online course is non-credit. Students who want to get credit should register in the 2-credit course offered on the main OSU campus..  That 2-credit course meets 5 times during the semester and requires the submission of multiple dissertation drafts. Attendance in the class and regular one-on-one tutorials with the instructor are also prerequisites to receive the grade of "Satisfactory." Unlike this credit course, however, the online course is self-paced and has no paper or attendance requirement.
