M/J Grade 8 Pre-Algebra
by Florida Association of School Administrators
This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.
In Grade 8, students continue to build on previous mathematical foundations as they expand their knowledge through other mathematical experiences in these three main areas:
- Formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations.
- Grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships.
- Analyzing two- and three- dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
|1||Linear equation in 2 variables||Systems of linear equations in two variables ( Algebra for kids ) app provide an easy way to help students to learn Algebra. Students can drag and drop or tap the numbers or variables of the equations to solve it. For example:students can click the numbers or variables to calculate it or drag and drop numbers, variables for substitution or Shift regulation. In addition, this app use reverse thinking, built-random way to generate the questions, so any time you can have all the new questions to practice. Teachers can also use this app, ready to produce 20 exam questions, email them to print. If you are interested in this app, you can refer to the following demo video:: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXOUu5hdyNM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyW14ve4O3s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmaNNvL2Foo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sz-U6UQocE This app contains the following features: 1. Solving systems of linear equations in two variables - by elimination method 2. Solving systems of linear equations in two variables - by substitution method More than two kinds of problem-solving methods, are using drag-and-click method, so children can easily learn of systems of linear equations. 3. Random generate Exam paper of system of linear equations and teacher can email it and print it out for students' Exam. 4. Solving systems of linear equations in two variables Calculator and graphing line function - students can input their own equations to calculate it and graphing the lines。 5. Solve by Graphing - the app will random give 2 equations and user can input the coordinates of the equations then the app will graphing the lines of 2 equations. |2||Firefighter Fred||Our educational apps transform complex math problems into fun adventures. Information can be better understood, when it has a visual stimulus and can be applied on an interesting problem, instead of just staying a theoretical mess of numbers. Let your child become a brainiac by simply playing a game. In our new app, kids learn how to use linear and quadratic functions to save aliens on a distant planet form burning. The water beam must hit the right window. In our special MathMode, kids can figure out the trajectory of the water and pick the function that goes with it. We aim to bring the fun back into science!||--||$0.99||View in iTunes|

|6||Desmos Graphing Calculator||Explore math with Desmos! Plot functions, create tables, add sliders, animate your graphs, and more -- all for free. At Desmos, we imagine a world of universal math literacy and envision a world where math is accessible and enjoyable for all students. We believe the key is learning by doing. To achieve this vision, we’ve started by building the next generation of the graphing calculator. Using our powerful and blazingly-fast math engine, the calculator can instantly plot any equation, from lines and parabolas up through derivatives and Fourier series. Sliders make it a breeze to demonstrate function transformations. It's intuitive, beautiful math. And best of all: it's completely free. Features: Graphing: Plot polar, cartesian, or parametric graphs. There’s no limit to how many expressions you can graph at one time - and you don’t even need to enter expressions in y= form! Sliders: Adjust values interactively to build intuition, or animate any parameter to visualize its effect on the graph. Try typing y=mx+b and adding sliders to get started. Tables: Input and plot data, or create an input-output table for any function. Statistics: Find best-fit lines, parabolas, and more. Calculus: Graph derivatives (d/dx) and explore key concepts by building secant and tangent line sliders. Graph Maclaurin Series (okay, all kinds of Taylor Series, but that guy gets no love...) Evaluate a definite integral (int) in an instant, or plot an integral with varying bounds. Zooming: Scale the axes independently or at the same time with the pinch of two fingers, or edit the window size manually to get the perfect window. Points of Interest: Touch a curve to show maximums, minimums, and points of intersection. Tap the gray points of interest to see their coordinates. Hold and drag along a curve to see the coordinates change under your finger. Scientific Calculator: Just type in any equation you want to solve and Desmos will show you the answer. It can handle square roots, logs, absolute value, and more. Inequalities: Plot cartesian and polar inequalities. Offline: No internet access required. Visit www.desmos.com to learn more and to see the free online version of our calculator.||--||Free||View in iTunes|

|8||EduCalc Classic||A powerful, flexible graphing calculator Does far more than most calculators out there. Features: 1) Scientific Calculator. Simple to grasp and easy to use, but powerful features are available when you need them. Available functions include the following: • the usual arithmetic functions and exponentiation. • square root, cube root, nth root, natural log, log base 10, log of arbitrary base, absolute value, factorial, permutations (nPr), combinations (nCr), modulus, random integer, bell curve, cumulative normal distribution, decimal to fraction. 2) Graphing. Capabilities: • Graph up to four equations at once. • Graphs are labeled. • You can drag the graph or pinch to zoom in or out. • Calculator can find roots and intersections. • Graph in polar coordinates. • Graph parametric equations • Can graph implicit functions, such as x^2+y^2-4=0. Most calculator apps can't do this! 3) A unit converter. With a tap, you can enter the result of your conversion into the calculator. Currently converts different units of the following: acceleration, angle, area, density, distance, energy, force, mass, power, pressure, speed, temperature, time, and volume. Great for doing physics homework! 4) Constants for scientific calculations -- speed of light, strength of gravity at Earth's surface, etc. etc. etc. Tapping on a constant will insert it into your calculation -- i.e, you don't have to key in the value. Again, great for doing physics homework! 5) It can make a table of the values of any function you care to enter. You can choose the starting x value of the table, as well as how much x increases for each successive row. 6) Help screens linked directly to many of the available functions and constants. Tap the disclosure arrow to see the definition. 7) Forgot the quadratic formula? Or the double-angle formulas for sine and cosine? The math/science reference hits the high points of various subjects. Currently includes algebra, differential and integral calculus, geometry, trigonometry, vectors, vector calculus, and classical mechanics. 8) Keep track of significant figures [AKA sig figs] 9) Statistics -- enter data and make a histogram, box and whisker plot, or scatter plot with optional regression line. If you are viewing this in iTunes, you will see five iPhone screenshots and five iPad screenshots. But even ten shots don't come close to showing everything this calculator can do. I'd love to hear your comments or suggestions. You can write me at email@example.com -- but without the xyz. Thanks!||--||Free||View in iTunes|
|10||Simitri||Explore the beauty of mathematics with 'Simitri', an iPad app which lets you create beautiful colourful patterns based on simple mathematical rules. The app introduces transformations and symmetry groups ('wallpaper groups') and then allows you to draw your own patterns using your chosen symmetries. It is an interesting fact that there are precisely 17 symmetry groups in two dimensions, and this app explains each one with interactive animations and examples from art and archaeology. When you're happy with your artwork you can save the images to your iPad, your camera roll, or show them off on Facebook and Twitter. A public gallery also showcases the best designs from around the world! * Learn about the 17 wallpaper groups * Understand translations, rotations, reflections and glide reflections with colourful animations * See examples of the beauty of symmetry and mathematics in the decorative arts and historical artefacts * Draw your own patterns using a choice of templates and colours * Save your designs, or post your designs to Facebook and Twitter * Submit your designs to the public gallery for everyone else to see!||--||Free||View in iTunes|
