Introductory Cosmology W15

by UC Irvine

This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.

Course Description

What is our place in the Universe? How did all that exists come to be? This course provides an overview of humanity's quest to orient itself in the vast cosmos, detailing what we know and how we have figured it out. Today we understand that the Universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old; that all of space and time began in a single event we call the Big Bang; and that our Sun is one of over 100 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, just one of more than 100 billion galaxies observable to us. Though these facts are staggering, the picture we have pieced together has emerged step-by-step from a series of observations about the world around us, and is built upon the first models of the cosmos proposed by ancient peoples.

Learning Modules: At UC Irvine we use a great on-line learning tool from  Rocketmix has made two key modules available especially for iTunesU students with a discounted fee.  For those interested in digging a little deeper with a fun experience, follow this link to sign up.  Note that this link is NOT intended for UC Irvine students and will not be graded for credit at UC Irvine.
