Course Description

What do we mean by justice? This challenging and wide-ranging learning pathway explores what justice means. The first half of the pathway looks at alternative definitions of justice, and rights. It starts by going back to ancient Greece to look at Plato’s ‘common view’ of justice from ‘The Republic’, and then unpicks the different approaches to justice under the philosophical approach of Utilitarianism. It then follows Nobel Laureate and author of ‘The idea of Justice’ Amartya Sen as he considers notions of comparative justice and injustice.

The pathway then looks at the idea of restorative justice, an approach that seeks to bring together victims and criminals. Case studies drawn from both the United Kingdom and New Zealand are illustrated with interviews with both victims and criminals, and lawyers and law enforcement professionals.

This pathway uses two distinctive learning styles. Most of the first half consists of audios and video interviews, together with their transcripts. The second half of the pathway is text based. The text-based second half focuses on rights and justice in international relations.
