Lord of the Rings I: The Road Goes Ever On

by Signum University

This course material is only available in the iTunes U app on iPhone or iPad.

Course Description

In this class, we will read carefully through The Fellowship of the Ring.  We will discuss Tolkien’s elaborate framing of the story and look at the growth and development of the story from its first chapter through the increased seriousness and darkness of the story that follows.  We will look at the characters and peoples whose stories Tolkien tells along the way, such as Aragorn, Gandalf, the fading of the High Elves, and the fall of the dwarves of Moria.  Throughout our discussion, of course, we will watch carefully the development of the Ring itself and Frodo’s own changing relationship with it, culminating in his moment of crisis on Amon Hen.

This three week course was taught live in the Summer of 2012 at Mythgard Academy and features both video and audio recordings from in the classroom.

Covering the stuff normally missed

As the professor himself describes it, this class focuses on the parts he normally has to skip when teaching LOTR. So caution… This is great (really great) for those already deeply immersed. Not sure if it’d be satisfying for someone approaching this material for the first time.

Professor Olsen does it again

The Professor is, IMHO, the best Tolkien scholar of our time, but he matches that with an ability to teach that is phenomenal.

Do it again, Professor, with The Two Towers and Return of the King!
