Course Description

The Cold War between the East and West, particularly between the Soviet Union and the United States, dominated the world stage in the second half of the twentieth century.  Conflicts were fueled in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.  One important aspect of the Cold War was the competition between the two super powers for superior military technology, including missiles, and the related race for dominance in space.
Lyndon B. Johnson played a key role in the United States' efforts to win the space race.  From his time as a senator chairing the Special Committee on Space and Astronautics, and guiding the passage of the National Aeronautics and Space Act, to his continued advocacy of the program as President, this course provides a comprehensive resource for primary source documents about the growth of the U.S. space program.  Learn about this exciting era of space exploration and the continuing impact of the program.
