Wish there were more ...

I've participated in hospital ethics-review and "maybe malpractice" panels, and I was struck by the us v. them nature of the meetings. Undeniably, mistakes happen. Sometimes the consequences are unspeakable. But I would wager -- and maybe I'm still naive -- that if a family were to hear the truth, they would understand that much can go wrong in a high-stakes situation and bear no ill will toward the medical team. I'm not too naive to believe malpractice suits will disappear, but survivors will be better off for not having that "gut feeling" that the hospital or physician is covering up the true story. I applaud the doctors in these essays for their bravery.
